If I were Kylie, I’d retire on the spot.

CD of the week: Little Boots, Hands | Music | The Observer (via walkonby)

Listening to this album the second time, I’m not sure I’d go quite so far as to declare Kylie’s irrelevance (not on account of this record, at least), but there’s certainly no need for any further Annie output. Little Boots has beat her at her own game. Considering Hesketh’s twee YouTube persona, it’s pretty remarkable that ‘Remedy’ sounds as Eurovision as it does. The BBC didn’t need to spend a penny on that endlessly naff Andrew Lloyd-Webber contest; they only needed to look as far as their own Sound of 2009 no. 1.

All the same, I can’t decide if I’ll want come back to Hands or not. ‘Stuck on Repeat’ remains my favourite track, but ‘No Brakes’ certainly makes clear that Pet Shop Boys made the wrong choice for a Brits guest star in Lady Gaga. And perhaps those Madonna videos aren’t really the outliers they seem. Phil Oakey’s presence on ‘Symmetry’ puts almost too fine a point on it: this is an album made by a girl who’d not entered primary school until the 90s, somehow reprising 80s electropop with such a contemporary sheen that they sound oughties.

And now, I think I’ll put on a bit of OMD. Maybe Erasure, too.

Old times’ sake, ya know.
